About the ceremony
What is a Kumbhabhishekam?
Kumbhabhishekam is the sacred consecration ceremony of a Hindu temple. The name joins two Sanskrit words: kumbha, the sacred pot or kalasam, and abhishekam, the ritual bathing of the deity. Over several days, priests perform homas and chant Vedic mantras before kalasams filled with sanctified water, invoking the divine presence into them. At the high point of the ceremony, this water is poured over the temple kalasams and the deities, consecrating the shrine. Traditionally, a temple renews its Kumbhabhishekam about every twelve years.
Kumbha
The sacred kalasam, filled with water and sanctified through days of mantras and homas.
Abhishekam
The holy bathing of the temple kalasams and deities with that sanctified water.
Prana Pratishtha
“Establishing the life-breath”: invoking the divine presence into the murtis so daily worship can begin.
Why a Tarunalayam?
When a temple is built, renovated or relocated, the deities are installed in a Tarunalayam (also called Balalayam), a consecrated shrine where worship continues while the main temple takes shape. Our temple is relocating to its newly acquired home at 870 South Main Street, Bellingham, and this Kumbhabhishekam establishes the deities there with full Agamic rites.
What typically happens
- Anujnai & Vigneshwara Puja – seeking divine permission and Lord Ganesha’s blessings to begin.
- Vastu Shanti – purifying and sanctifying the site.
- Yagasala Pujas – several sessions of homas and Vedic chanting before the kalasams.
- Kalasa Purappadu – the sanctified kalasams are carried in procession to the shrine.
- Maha Purnahuti & Kumbhabhishekam – the final offering, followed by the abhishekam and first darshan.
